Unique, professional coaching for youth players
My mission is to help as many young players as possible in the best way I can
Are you getting the help you need?
I am a basketball coach from Worthing, England. From my 30 years in basketball, I've developed a unique approach to coaching that helps young players learn the skills they need to achieve maximum success on and off the court.
Becoming an elite performer takes dedication, hard work, and great coaching, but most importantly, the correct approach. If you set sail for the China but you've got the worng co-ordinates, then you're heading in the wrong direction! This is what I see a lot - kids working too hard on things that won't help them. My approach is professional, holistic, and effective. This is the kind of work I do.
What are you here for?
ABOUT ME
I'm a professional coach with 22 years of experience at every level of basketball all over the World. Now I focus on helping youth basketball players who love the game and have aspirations of playing professionally. Not all of them get there, but when they work with me, they figure out how to be excellent at whatever it is they do end up doing as a career.
In my early 20's, I led professional teams on two different continents learning not only what it takes to win at the professional level, but also what it takes to survive and thrive in different cultures. Since then, I have coached youth basketball in more than 10 Countries, including working with the NBA in Asia.
I have a wealth of experience in teaching and coaching. I care deeply about my craft and I work tirelessly to help young athletes reach their goals. When you work with me, you are working on your whole skillset - you will become a better player, a better leader, a better team-mate, and a better son or daughter.

It was so incredible to spend time with everyone at @poseidonbasketball85 basketball club and give them a memorable experience. It was too short, but long enough for us to realise that doing things like this is a win-win for everyone. @harley410r @henarjsm @danielhubbard_17 @amarvir.176 all worked hard to make our free basketball sessions an amazing experience for the kids and these were the memories, above all the other experiences along the way, that will stay forever. Man, it’s tough watching myself speak Vietnamese.. seems like I’m rusty. But we’re heading back to sharpen the tools. I made a promise to myself that I’d get back to studying Vietnamese so I could truly become fluent. Learning languages is something I find really interesting and fun, especially when it unlocks experiences that you can’t access in English. This is a message for the kids @poseidonbasketball85 who we’ll be visiting next week to share the court with. Hẹn gặp mọi người sớm nhé 😊Button

What do you do first thing in the morning? I drink at least a pint of water with sea salt. Sea salt has lots of important minerals that your body needs, and after sleeping for 8-9 hours it’s a great way to start the day. You can also add lemon, which I’m doing more and more. This is not only great in the morning, but before training - stop spending money on gatorade, powerade, whatever.. Nature has it all for you, get some proper sea salt and energise your water. 💦Button
-
Rope Flow. Day 2. This has been a wonderful new experience for me. I’m interested in movement and recently I got in touch with @timsgym who has introduced me to “The Golden Teacher”. As soon as I started working on some of the most basic movements I was hooked. I’m very excited to explore this practice in the coming months #ropeflow @weckmethodButton

What does it mean to win? Is it just a feeling? When I put my head down into the cold water, I felt victorious, that’s the only way to describe it. I’ve been taking cold showers and sea swimming in the cold for a while now. It continues to be an inward journey. Every morning when I wake up I experience some kind of trepidation, some kind of nervousness about getting into the cold. But now that I’ve built up some experience I’ve also got this knowledge that it’s never as difficult as the mind makes it out to be. So despite not really wanting to go in, I do anyway. I’m always rewarded. Every morning I win a small battle, which gives me strength. There’s something about doing difficult things.. Did I experience that winning feeling? It sure felt like it. Funny, because there was no competition..Button

Simple stuff. But it stands the test of time - do you know how to get open off of an away screen EVERY time? #basketball #basketball🏀 #basketballtrainingButton
-
This is a great game for so many reasons. Try it out #basketball #basketball🏀 #basketballtrainingButton
-
Learn how to get open - use contact to hold off your defender and give your team-mate a clear signal of where to pass the ball #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
After a roll (off a ball screen), or a back-cut when you get inside position on the defender, you can use a seal to stop the defender from getting back into the play #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
Off-ball defense: Move toward the ball/hand in the passing lane/avoid contact unless close to the basket/stay low and see both man & ball #basketball #basketball🏀 #basketballtrainingButton
-
Playing off the ball: Prepare early/Use contact and hold your defender/Do not break the contact until the pass is made #basketball #basketball🏀 #basketballtrainingButton
-
Defending on-ball screens - this is how you communicate with your team-mate so you can deal with the screen. If you say these things, you’ll immediately be better at defending the screen #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
The goal of on-ball defense is to stay in front of the ball. How you achieve that is up to you. Is sliding the best way to move laterally on defense? Could there be a quicker, more effective way? For a long time I taught players to slide at all times because that’s what i was taught. But then I started thinking about it and experimenting. Now I think there are many situations where sprinting, and sometimes crossing the feet, are necessary to stay in front. Ultimately, your job as a defender is to solve the problem, not to solve the problem in a certain way #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
How to get better.. Learn how to be tough.. Find someone better than you & play 1 on 1 #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
A message for everyone entering scrimmage season #basketball #basketball🏀 #basketballtrainingButton
-
Sharpen your focus #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
Stability leads to consistency #basketballtrainingButton
-
Visualise success and quiet the mind #basketball #basketball🏀 #basketballtrainingButton
-
Learn to be consistent! If you have a lot of moving parts when you’re shooting, it’ll be more difficult to be consistent. Keep your head up, eyes on the target, keep your body ‘quiet’. As you work and become more of a consistent shooter, you won’t need to see the basket for as long before you shoot to be successful. Great players only need a glimpse of the target to be able to hit it. But it takes time and patience to develop the ability to pay attention to where you are in relation to the hoop before you can start scanning for other things during the game and still be able to make shots under pressure. Starting with free throws is a good way to work on a stable movement pattern that gets the ball on the right flight path to score #basketball #basketball🏀 #basketballtrainingButton
-
Do you want to be able to make free throws in the pressure moments? Develop your own routine to help yourself calm down & focus. Routines help us to move from thinking about things on the outside (crowd, score, trash-talking opponents) to the inside (breathing, mind-body connection). Once you can move your concentration to your inner stare, you can calm down. You’ll need that calmness to be able to execute your free throws to the best of your ability in the moments when it matters most #basketball #basketball🏀 #basketballtrainingButton
-
This is how to build a series of post moves off of a single move. We began the week with a double drop step, then built in counters for each time the defense predicts what you’re going to do next. Take your time in the post, fight for position, then use pump fakes and good footwork to get the shot you want #olajuwon34 #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
Simple tip, very important & highly effective #basketball #basketballtraining #postup #basketballcoachingButton
-
The base move: double drop step, can be used to get better position. You could even take 3 or 4 dribbles to get there, as the defense will want to stop you.. it becomes a battle for position.. Once you get there you have lots of options: “spy” drop step; turnaround; up & under. Once you have position, you’re winning.. take your time & get the shot you want #basketball #basketball🏀Button
-
Post series - reviewing the base move (double drop-step) and the counter (drop, spin) #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
Post moves part 2: the counter - when you start your post move, the defender may try to stop you from going where you want. When they do this, use this counter that I call “The Spy” to get to te basket. After the initial double drop step, you’ll see the defender on your shoulder - keep your eyes & your weight towards the middle as you drop the bottom foot quickly toward the basket, spin & finish #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
Post move series! Part one: Double drop step. Developing a post game can be an important weapon for ANY player - as a guard, I think this is a great way to add to your bag, giving you more offensive choices in more spots on the floor.Button
-
Everyone talks about communication, but not many people talk about HOW to do it effectively. Here’s our way: 1. Early: when you see things happening, talk about them before they happen 2. Loud: let your team-mates know!! 3. Clear: be precise, make sure you can be understood. This is the beginning.. #basketball #basketballtrainingButton
-
Do you want to be a great defender? A great place to start is finding out what your opponent is best at and taking that away.. Are they good going right? Force them left. Good from 3? Pressure and force to drive. At lower levels, you may need to ‘learn on the job’, by observing what your man can do and by trial & error. When you get to higher levels you should get more information earlier from scouting reports & video, but players have more weapons so it becomes more difficult to shut them down. One big reason to be a student of the game; you will get a big advantage and can be a solid defender #basketballButton
-
For guards.Button
-
There’s a time and a place for the 2-handed chest pass.. but for most of the time, get the ball away from the middle of your body! Create better angles, pass the ball faster and be more creative! #basketball #basketball🏀Button
-
Max 2 bounce, no finishes inside the lane. Work on crating space & shooting under pressureButton

Win or Learn? Yesterday’s game: Regulation: Down 2, 12 seconds left, they have the ball, 2 fouls to give. We get a steal, run out lay-up, tied game. As time ticked down we stole it again & the ball rattled in & out as the buzzer sounded. Overtime. We’re up 1 with the ball & 20 seconds left. They steal it, run out lay-up for the win. You could say that those four plays decided the game. But what about the other 44.5 minutes? We lost this one, and there was a lot of frustration, anger, disappointment & sadness at the end of the game. The loss seemed to force us to look at ourselves & find solutions. But if we would’ve won, does that mean we wouldn’t need to learn? As much as the win can bring elation and joy and the loss can bring heart-break, we need to find a way to look objectively at our performance and continue our work towards individual and collective success. The game is an opportunity to perform and to express what you have been working on. Be careful not to get distracted by the wins & losses. Win or Learn? No. Play the game. Somebody’s going to win, somebody’s going to lose. Take the wins & losses as they come; enjoy the process and keep improving. Love #kairosperformanceButton

here’s nothing like experience as a teacher. But as young players, we’ve got to study the game and prepare for the pressure moments. At this point in the game we were losing by two points with less than 30 seconds to go. When you don’t have the ball and you’re down you need to foul to put the other team at the free throw line so that you can get the ball back with time left to win the game. But if you don’t do it in the right way you can be called for an unsportsmanlike foul which means that the other team will get free throws and they will get the ball back again and you’ll lose your opportunity to score. When you need to foul to stop the clock and get the ball back, make sure that you make a play for the ball. It has to look like you are trying to steal the ball and that the contact is incidental. This is a difficult skill to master, but you will need it. In this game we were actually called for an unsportsmanlike foul, but were able to get another chance to send the game to OT. We got lucky this time, next time we need to be better preparedButton

A unique basketball experience in my favourite place in the World!
Travel
The first pillar of our trip is travelling to a far-away land. In 2024 we made 6 stops across the Country. Each one was unique and brought it's own experiences, food, culture, and challenges. Although I speak almost fluent Vietnamese, some of the accents in the North are tough for me! But anyway, we take time to study the language, to meet people and get to know what life is like in a country like Vietnam. Maybe my favourite part of this trip is going to all of these wonderful places and having such beautiful experiences.
Basketball
10 Years ago I was somehow one of the first professional coaches here in Vietnam. Many of the young players that I coached back then have grown up and started their own basketball clubs and academies across the Country. On all of our stops in Vietnam, we have the chance to run Individual and small group training sessions, as well as full practices and games. In 2024 our group went 4-0 against some tough competition - a tough act to follow in 2025!
Giving back
VBET is a chance for us to give back to those less fortunate than us. Unfortunately, in Vietnam it's not hard to find people that don't have much. But what they lack in material wealth, they more than make up for in spirit. The Vietnamese people are so happy when they have the opportunity to spend time with people like us, from a far-away land. Kids here don't often get to speak English with native speakers, let alone be coached by players and coaches who do this for a living. Wherever we go on our trip, we run free basketball clinics, English lessons, and school visits so that we may spread more joy in the World. Not only does this benefit the people we visit, but it brings a smile to all ofus as well.
Family, Food, & Culture
This is not your ordinary basketball trip. I am not a travel agent or a host tournament. This trip is about broadening your horizons as a young person and taking in what Vietnam truly has to offer - a different view of the World. The guys that came on our first trip embraced this every day. They ate weird and wonderful food, they spent time with my Vietnamese family, and met many new friends along the way. This trip will give you the chance to see Vietnam in a unique way that might just change your life forever.
